Discovery’s Curriculum Implementation

Our Curriculum is implemented with our Curriculum Intent, our ethos and our pupils being at the heart of all we do at Discovery Primary School.

Curriculum maps are produced for each year group; these seek to provide clarity of coverage, with a strong emphasis on progression of knowledge and skills.  Carefully selected enrichment opportunities are key to providing all pupils with rich experiences to further enhance their learning.  Developing an understanding of the fundamental British values complements aspects of the curriculum and drives our whole school assembly themes.

Our curriculum design is based around the principles of the Cornerstones Curriculum, a nationally recognised approach for delivering outstanding learning opportunities for children.

The Cornerstones Curriculum is a creative and thematic approach to learning that is mapped to the Primary National Curriculum allowing for comprehensive coverage of national expectations.

Our curriculum is delivered through Imaginative Learning Projects (ILPs) and Knowledge rich projects (KRPs), providing a variety of exciting and motivating learning opportunities that make creative links through all facets of the children’s learning.  Children will progress through four stages of learning in each Project –

  • Engage - a short stage in which children take part in a memorable experience to stimulate their curiosity, ask questions and talk about their prior learning.
  • Develop - a longer stage, where children delve more deeply into the theme, explore and acquire new skills and knowledge, revisit previously acquired skills and knowledge, make links between subjects, explore, make, read and write for a variety of purposes across the curriculum.
  • Innovate- a crucial opportunity for children to return to previous skills and knowledge and apply them in new contexts.
  • Express - gives children a structured opportunity to reflect on their learning, test their knowledge and celebrate their achievements.

Curriculum organisation and creative timetabling enable learners a plethora of opportunities for constant recapping of knowledge and skills.

We deliver a coherently planned curriculum with a progressive development and understanding of key knowledge, skills and concepts, which is re-visited regularly.  Some of our content is subject specific whilst other content is combined through a rich cross-curricular approach - enabling us to put knowledge into a purposeful context.

The use of Knowledge Organisers provide transparency within the curriculum - an overview of pre-teach content and also a means of tracking knowledge, skills and understanding of concepts in the form of a variety of retrieval exercises. This regular revisiting enables knowledge to be committed to long-term memory.
