Maths in EYFS

Children in EYFS at Discovery Primary School will  have a deep understanding of numbers to 10, including different ways we can make each number. They will also be able to look at group of objects (up to 5) and realise how many there are without counting.

By the end of Reception, children should be able to recall their number bonds to 5 automatically and some of their number bonds to 10. Children learn how to do this through a range of interactive and practical activities before they then begin to start the formal written processes. Examples of these activities are seen in the pictures below.

Children also learn to select, rotate and manipulate shapes to develop spatial reasoning skills and  compose and decompose shapes so that they recognise a shape can have other shapes within it, just as numbers can.

Children learn to Continue, copy and create repeating patterns and compare length, weight and capacity.
