Science at Discovery

Here at Discovery, we believe our science curriculum should encourage our pupils to be inquisitive learners who are willing to explore and understand the world around them. We recognise the importance of Science as a core subject within the primary curriculum and convey to all children that science is part of everyday life. We believe that Science should be informative, exciting and accessible to all, through the delivery of well-planned activities and high-quality teaching. Our science curriculum provides children with a broad range of life skills to use and apply within the wider school curriculum and throughout life. We encourage children to explore and understand the natural and technical world through asking questions and seeking answers to build sufficient understanding. These skills help children to generate ideas, make decisions  and to use evidence to understand key concepts.

In EYFS, children are taught Science through the ’Understanding the World’ area of the EYFS curriculum. They study of science is introduced to them indirectly through activities that encourage every child to explore, problem solve, observe, predict, think, make decisions and talk about the world around them.

As children progress through the school, they will develop these key skills further by studying the National Curriculum science objectives in an engaging and stimulating way. Through teaching the National Curriculum for science, we aim to ensure that all pupils will develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. When they leave in Year 6, we want our pupils to be equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and in the future.
