Maths at Discovery

Maths Curriculum Rationale

At Discovery, our aim is for all pupils to be confident mathematicians, with a secure understanding of Maths and be equipped with the skills of calculation, reasoning and problem solving needed in life beyond school.

During their time at Discovery, pupils will become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice.

Our curriculum builds on skills and understanding in a systematic and progressive way, always looking for links to build on pupils’ prior knowledge and understanding. We want pupils to make connections across different mathematical ideas to develop a secure fluency, be able to reason mathematically and be competent in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. Maths is an interconnected subject in which pupils need to be able to move fluently between mathematical ideas. The programmes of study are, by necessity, organised into distinct areas, but pupils will make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. They will also apply their mathematical knowledge to science and other subjects.

As our pupils progress, we intend for our pupils to acquire the ability to reason mathematically, have an appreciation and love of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. Above all, we intend for all our pupils to enjoy maths, seeing the beauty in the subject and how it runs through all aspects of life.
