Maths in Years 5 and 6

Children will continue to develop their written methods for all four calculations, becoming fluent using the more well known compact methods. Videos to show how each calculation is taught in Year 5 and 6 are provided below. In Year5, long multiplication is taught and in Year 6 long division is taught. Children will also be taught to use the most appropriate method to solve a calculation, whether it is a written method or a mental method. Identifying multiples, factors, common factors and prime numbers up to 100 will also be taught.

Children will learn how to add and subtract fractions with different denominators and multiply proper fractions with whole numbers. They will also learn to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions. In Year 6, children are taught to divide fractions with a whole number. Children also learn to recognise the percent symbol and find percentages of different quantities.

Finding the area and perimeter of triangles , quadrilaterals and parallelograms is also taught. In Year 6, children are taught to use simple formulae and generate and describe linear sequences.

Reasoning and problem solving skills are embedded within each lesson. Children are challenged to apply newly learnt concepts and their mathematical reasoning in real life problems and higher order questioning.
