Phonics - Phase 4

We start teaching phase 4 Phonics in the final term of Reception and this then continues into Year 1. There are no new sounds to learn within phase 4. Isntead the focus is on blending consonant clusters next to each other e.g. fl, br, cl where each letter is still making it's own sound. It also focuses on introducing longer and more complex words (polysylabic words).

Each phase includes the teaching of Common Exception Words. These are words that we are unable to use our Phonics knowledge to sound out and instead we just have to learn to read them by sight. You will find a link to the Phase 4 Common Exception Words below.
